From opposition to belief
Umar belonged to the Adi clan of Quraysh. After initially opposing Islam, he accepted it and later migrated to Madinah, becoming a close companion and adviser to Muhammad ﷺ.

Government and institutions
As caliph from 634, Umar oversaw expansion into former Byzantine and Sasanian territories. His administration developed provincial responsibilities and payment registers, while the migration became the starting point for the Islamic calendar.

Succession and remembrance
Umar was fatally wounded in Madinah in 644. Before his death he appointed a council to choose his successor. His rule remains an important reference in Muslim discussions of governance and public accountability.
