Life and setting
Sibawayh was born near Shiraz and later moved to Basra. Although his family spoke Persian, he devoted himself to studying Arabic and became a major authority on its grammar.

Work and legacy
Al-Kitab remained a reference for later generations of language scholars. Its influence can be described confidently even though accounts differ about the author’s birth, death and famous debate in Baghdad.
