Life and setting
Shaddad came from the Ansar of Madinah. He later lived in the Syrian and Palestinian region, where students learned hadith from him. He was remembered for knowledge and gentleness.

Work and legacy
His reports include teachings about worship and careful conduct towards others. His sons Ya‘la ibn Shaddad and Muhammad ibn Shaddad were among his transmitters. Sources preserve different dates for his death.
