Life and setting
Samura grew up in Madinah after his mother moved there following his father’s death. He later lived in Iraq, where his reports circulated among students in Basra and Kufa.

Work and legacy
He also held administrative duties under Ziyad ibn Abih. His harsh measures against the Kharijites drew criticism. His work as a transmitter and the contested record of his government should be considered separately.
