Life and setting

Ibn Hibban came from Bust, in the region of present-day Afghanistan. He travelled across many centres of learning and studied with Ibn Khuzayma before teaching and serving as a judge.

Work and legacy

His books became important tools for hadith study. His judgments about transmitters sometimes differ from those of other critics, so inclusion in one of his books is not proof of scholarly unanimity.
