Biographical background
Later accounts connect Fatima al-Fihri with the founding of the al-Qarawiyyin mosque in Fez. They describe her using inherited wealth for the project. These accounts were written centuries after the events.

Historical context
Al-Qarawiyyin became an important place of learning over time. The surviving accounts do not establish that Fatima herself founded a university or its library. Her life dates and parts of the founding story remain uncertain.
