Life and setting

Abu Mas‘ud belonged to the Khazraj tribe of Madinah. His son Bashir and later students transmitted his hadith. He later lived in Kufa and briefly acted as Ali’s deputy there.

Work and legacy

His title al-Badri should not be used to claim undisputed participation in the Battle of Badr. Hadith scholars and biographers disagree over whether the name refers to the battle or residence at Badr.
