A host among the Ansar
Abu Ayyub, whose name was Khalid ibn Zayd, belonged to the Najjar branch of Khazraj. After Muhammad ﷺ arrived in Madinah, his household hosted him during the establishment of the mosque and nearby living quarters.

Last journey
He died during an expedition toward Constantinople. Sources differ over the expedition’s date, so a single year is not asserted here. The shrine associated with his burial later became important in Istanbul’s religious life.
